Welcome to Los Angeles: Tucker and Díaz Combine to Help Dodgers Defeat Arizona Diamondbacks

For the first time at Dodger Stadium, the sound of a trumpet echoed, as a live musician played the familiar melody amidst the cheers of an excited crowd. This signaled the entrance of closer Edwin Díaz to the mound with the team holding just a one-run lead. That one-run advantage was precisely created for him by right fielder Kyle Tucker.

The Dodgers' biggest weaknesses last year were the bullpen and the outfield. They addressed these gaps by signing the best available free agents in the offseason, Díaz and Tucker. In today's game where the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4, both new additions delivered crucial performances: Tucker hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, and Díaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure his first save of the season.

Through the first seven innings, the Dodgers had only two hits: a solo home run by Alex Freeland and a three-run homer by Mookie Betts, both occurring in the third inning. After Betts' homer, Diamondbacks pitchers retired 14 consecutive Dodgers batters.

After the Dodgers took the lead in the third inning, the Diamondbacks quickly tied the game at 4-4, forcing right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan out of the game with one out in the fourth inning. Sheehan left runners on second and third, and left-handed reliever Jack Dreyer entered, allowing both runners to score. From then on, the Dodgers' bullpen—often criticized last year—and the Diamondbacks' pitchers engaged in a duel of "whoever gives up a run loses," and ultimately neither side surrendered any further runs.

In the eighth inning, Freeland hit a double, breaking the Dodgers' streak of 14 consecutive outs. Shohei Ohtani's ground ball advanced him to third base, and Tucker then hit a single to right field, sending him home.

Díaz issued one walk in the ninth inning but ultimately stranded the potential tying run at second base, closing the door on the game.
