The Yankees will activate Gil and designate Rule 5 draft pick pitcher Winquest for assignment.

In December last year, right-handed pitcher Cade Winquest became the first player selected by the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft in 14 years. Four months later, Winquest made the Yankees' Opening Day roster.

However, according to a report today by The Athletic's Chris Kirschner, Winquest will have to wait a bit longer for his MLB debut, as the Yankees have designated him for assignment. The 25-year-old Winquest, selected from the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rule 5 draft, had to remain on the MLB roster, but he has not yet appeared for the Yankees' bullpen.

As a Rule 5 draft player designated for assignment, Winquest must not only clear the waiver process, but the Cardinals must also decline to pay the Yankees $50,000 to reclaim him back to St. Louis, in order for him to remain within the Yankees' system. It is possible Winquest could navigate these steps, but it is unlikely.

As a corresponding roster move, Kirschner reported that the Yankees will recall Luis Gil, who began the season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees did not require a fifth starter in the early weeks of the season, so they opted to have Gil maintain his pitching rhythm in the minors. In his sole appearance on Sunday, Gil pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 6 batters.

Last season, Gil appeared in 11 games for the Yankees, pitching 57 innings with an ERA of 3.32 and striking out 41 batters. In 2024, Gil was honored as the American League Rookie of the Year, posting a 3.50 ERA over 151.2 innings with 171 strikeouts.
