NBA Announces Weekly MVP: Doncic Wins Again, Ball First-Time Winner; Harden, Amen, Wenbanyama Among Nominees

On March 24 Beijing time, the NBA officially announced the Week 22 Players of the Week. Lakers star Luka Doncic was named Western Conference Player of the Week, while Hornets star LaMelo Ball ("Three Ball") was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Stars like Harden, Amen, and Wenbanyama received nominations.

Western Conference Player of the Week: Luka Doncic

This is Doncic's 4th Player of the Week award this season (the most in the league) and his second consecutive win. It also marks his 19th career Player of the Week award.

Doncic led his team to a perfect 4-game road trip, defeating the Rockets twice and overcoming the Heat and Magic. He averaged 38.5 minutes per game, posting 42.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 3.0 steals; with shooting percentages of 50.0% FG, 39.0% 3PT, and 72.3% FT. The 27-year-old star scored over 30 points in all four games, including his first 60-point game in his Lakers career, solidifying his status as a top contender for the regular season MVP.

March 17 win over Rockets: Scored 36 points, surpassing Kobe Bryant and Jerry West in single-season 35+ point games, rising to 8th in Lakers franchise history.

Second game against Rockets: Recorded a big double-double with 40 points and 10 assists, achieving his 4th 40+ point and 10+ assist game this season, ranking second in Lakers franchise history for single-season occurrences.

March 20 road win over Heat: Set a new Lakers career high with 60 points, hitting 9 three-pointers, plus 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Became the 7th player in franchise history to score 60 points and the 9th to have multiple 50+ point games.

March 22 win over Magic: Scored 33 points, reaching his 40th 30+ point game this season, ranking fourth in Lakers franchise history.

Doncic set a new Lakers single-season record for three-pointers made. This season, he has played 59 games (all starts), averaging 35.8 minutes per game, leading the league with 33.4 points per game, along with 7.9 rebounds, 8.4 assists, and 1.6 steals.

The Lakers currently hold a record of 46 wins and 25 losses, enjoying a 9-game winning streak and firmly holding the third place in the Western Conference.

Eastern Conference Player of the Week: LaMelo Ball

Following a week where the Hornets won all three games, Ball earned his first career Player of the Week award. During that period, he averaged 26.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Ball and teammate Brandon Miller averaged 4.7 three-pointers made per game last week, tied for first in the East; from March 17 to March 23, Ball's averages for points, assists, and steals all ranked among the top five in the Eastern Conference.

This guard in his sixth NBA season has made 188 three-pointers since December 2, leading the entire league; this season he has made 220 three-pointers total, ranking third in the league, behind only teammate Kon Knupel and Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic.

On March 22 against Memphis Grizzlies, Ball made 7 or more three-pointers in a game, marking his 7th such game this season, tied with Doncic for the most in the league. On March 18, the Hornets defeated the Heat by 30 points; Ball scored 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists within 20 minutes, becoming the first Hornets player and the 11th player in NBA history to achieve this. On March 20 against Orlando Magic, Ball recorded his 7th 30+ point game this season, along with his 9th career game with 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 10 assists—all other Hornets players combined have only achieved this 3 times.

This award brings the Hornets franchise total Player of the Week awards to 32. Ball is the 15th Hornets player to win the award and the team's second this season after Brandon Miller on February 3. Ball and Miller are also the first Hornets players to win the award since Miles Bridges in the 2021-22 season.
