Will the Trail Blazers select interior players for three consecutive years? US media suggests picking up a 2.06-meter forward who may compete with Hansen for playing time.

On March 27 Beijing time, Portland media Rip City Project published an article discussing the Trail Blazers' draft, suggesting the team could very likely select interior players for three straight years. Here is the relevant analysis—

The Trail Blazers may need to find a replacement for Robert Williams this offseason—the talented but injury-prone center's contract is expiring. The Trail Blazers should address this issue in the 2026 NBA Draft, and within their draft pick range, there is a perfect candidate: Kentucky University forward Jaden Quaintance, who stands 2.06 meters tall.

Will the Trail Blazers really use three consecutive lottery picks on interior players? This depends on various factors, but they should at least seriously consider it.

If Williams leaves, the Trail Blazers' frontcourt will face a significant gap.

Williams is highly likely to leave Portland after this season. Bill Simmons even stated that Williams, after his strong performance with the Trail Blazers, could secure a three-year, $50 million contract in the offseason. Despite his impressive play, considering the team's current center lineup and Williams' injury history, this price is too high for the Trail Blazers. However, losing this "Time Lord" would create a major void in the team's frontcourt.

Williams brought defensive versatility to the Trail Blazers; compared to Clingan and Yang Hansen, two interior players who primarily defend in drop coverage, he excels more in perimeter defense. Quaintance is one of the most athletic interior players in this draft class, boasting a 2.26-meter wingspan and being a top-tier shot blocker. He could become a similar type of player to Williams, helping the Trail Blazers maintain their defensive system for years to come.

Unfortunately, both players share similarities in terms of injuries affecting their availability and performance. Quaintance transferred from Arizona State University to Kentucky University to begin his sophomore season. Early in the season, he was firmly ranked among the top five in talent-rich draft projections, but he never fully recovered from the ACL tear he suffered at the end of his freshman season. He played only four games at Kentucky, averaging 16.8 minutes per game, scoring 5.0 points and grabbing 5.0 rebounds.

Quaintance could become a late-lottery steal for the Trail Blazers.

Injuries have caused his draft stock to fall; in FanSided's latest NBA mock draft, he is projected to be selected at the 10th pick. This might be a blessing in disguise for the Trail Blazers—a fully healthy Quaintance would hardly fall to the later part of the lottery.

Considering Williams' potential departure, the rationale for acquiring Quaintance is far stronger than many realize. By selecting Yang Hansen last year in a move that surprised the world, the Trail Blazers have proven they are willing to choose high-risk, high-reward prospects and are not deterred by positional overlap. Unlike Hansen, Quaintance possesses perimeter defensive ability and can play both the power forward and center positions. This would alleviate the team's interior crowding issue, especially as Clingan's three-point shooting has improved.

Williams has proven to be one of the most valuable players for the Trail Blazers this season. Under other circumstances, the team would certainly want to keep him long-term. No one can predict; perhaps both sides could eventually reach a mutually beneficial contract. But Portland must seek alternatives this summer, and selecting a younger, cheaper "Williams replica" like Quaintance in the late lottery is undoubtedly an attractive steal option. However, if the Trail Blazers pursue this strategy, it means Yang Hansen would face another internal competitor for playing time next season.
