HOT: How Indonesian naturalization could lead to the Dutch team's result being annulled

Indonesian naturalized defender Dean James has become the center of controversy in the Netherlands, as his eligibility to play is questioned, raising the risk of affecting the match outcome.

Dutch and Indonesian media are buzzing over the controversy surrounding Go Ahead Eagles defender Dean James. This Dutch-born Indonesian naturalized player's eligibility is under scrutiny after NAC Breda filed a complaint with KNVB, requesting a review of the match result in the Eredivisie (Dutch national league).

Specifically, NAC Breda protested the 0-6 loss to Go Ahead Eagles on March 15, 2026, arguing that Dean James was not qualified to play due to issues related to his Indonesian naturalization. The club proposed annulling the result, even considering the option of replaying the match. The core issue lies in the player's change of nationality, a detail that could lead to serious legal consequences for the entire league.

According to legal experts in the Netherlands, Dean James's acquisition of Indonesian nationality in March 2025 to play for the archipelago's national team may cause him to lose his Dutch nationality under current regulations. This directly affects the player's work and playing eligibility in the Eredivisie, especially given the strict regulations for non-European Union players.

Lawyer Dolf Segaar stated: “I believe NAC is correct in asserting that James is not eligible to play.” Meanwhile, expert Pieter Krop emphasized: “This is a major misunderstanding. You may still hold a Dutch passport, but you are no longer a Dutch citizen. And if you are no longer a citizen, you also lose your work permit.”

If considered a non-EU player, Dean James would be required to have a work permit and receive a very high minimum salary under Dutch regulations, reportedly exceeding 600,000 Euros per year.“If the club did not obtain a work permit, he is not eligible to play. Now he is a non-EU player, requiring a permit and a higher salary according to standards,” Segaar added.

The issue does not stop at Dean James but also raises concerns for other Indonesian naturalized players playing in the Netherlands. However, AFC Ajax confirmed that Maarten Paes's documentation is fully valid, while Fortuna Sittard also indicated that Justin Hubner's case is being monitored but no issues have arisen yet.

The Indonesian national team features many Dutch-born players in its squad.

In the Eredivisie system, players like Dean James, Maarten Paes, and Justin Hubner are recorded as holding Indonesian nationality. Additionally, names such as Nathan Tjoe-A-On, Tim Geypens, and Miliano Jonathans could also be affected.

Initial response from KNVB indicates the complexity of the case: “The professional football organization has received a request from NAC Breda to declare the match on March 15, 2026 against Go Ahead Eagles invalid and potentially replay it, due to doubts about a player's eligibility.” The authority emphasized: “The case will be thoroughly examined. This is a complex issue with various aspects, so it requires time to process.”

This development has drawn particular attention from Indonesian national team officials and fans, as the risk could extend to similar cases in the Netherlands. However, with Maarten Paes and Justin Hubner confirmed to have no obstacles yet, immediate concerns are somewhat alleviated, though Dean James's case still requires close monitoring.
