The 2026 World Cup is set to kick off in three months, yet Cole Palmer is struggling to persuade Thomas Tuchel to select him for the tournament because of his notably poor form.
The 24-year-old midfielder did everything possible to salvage Chelsea's situation during their 0-3 loss to Everton last weekend. However, it was futile as The Blues suffered their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions and their second straight loss in the Premier League.
Cameras captured him spending 20 seconds complaining to Pedro Neto during a shooting opportunity. The number 10 has consistently shown frustration recently. He appears to be struggling to regain his peak form due to persistent injuries and is dissatisfied with his teammates for not being sufficiently skilled.
This is a complex issue, and he is becoming a problem for himself and for manager Liam Rosenior. Even when Maresca was still at Stamford Bridge, Palmer did not have his most effective season.
This situation is truly alarming for The Blues, but conversely, Palmer's declining performance might make Tuchel's job with the England national team easier. In previous seasons, Palmer was the team's superstar; his performances significantly contributed to victories in the Club World Cup and Conference League, as well as helping Chelsea return to the Champions League.

Palmer is merely a backup option for the England national team.
The match against Everton could be considered the least effective performance by the English midfielder this season. Statistics show that the number 10 had only one shot in 90 minutes, which even missed the target. He also failed to successfully complete any dribbles.
Looking deeper into this season's statistics, Palmer is experiencing a complete "crisis" compared to the standard expected of a number 10. In the Premier League, over 1,400 minutes played, the 24-year-old midfielder has scored 9 goals and provided 1 assist. In the same amount of playing time last season, he had 15 goals and 8 assists.
Analyzing the specific numbers more closely reveals a much worse situation. Currently, Palmer has a very low expected assists figure of 1.8, down from last year's 3.94. This is reflected in him creating only 18 opportunities in the league, with just 3 considered clear chances.
During the same period last season, he created 44 opportunities, and this decline indicates that Palmer's ability to deliver accurate passes or penetrate into the right positions has significantly weakened. His duel success rate has dropped by about 10%, and his successful dribble rate stands at only 37.5%, one of the lowest among forwards in the league.
On the other hand, the 24-year-old forward's goal count and shots are also less impressive. His current total goals largely come more from penalty kicks than last season. His non-penalty expected goals index has decreased from around 8 to 4.61; this figure isn't terrible but clearly shows a downward trend compared to his previous peak form. Given his current physical and psychological issues, Palmer is clearly not the expected choice for both Chelsea and the England national team.
