Malaysia coach speaks out sharply after the most disastrous ranking drop in history

Coach Peter Cklamovski defends Malaysia, stating that the FIFA ranking drop is due to penalties and does not reflect the team's actual ability.

Head coach Peter Cklamovski officially defended the Malaysian team after "Harimau Malaya" experienced a significant drop in the world rankings, emphasizing that the cause stems from penalties rather than technical factors. This viewpoint was presented amid the team facing considerable pressure from public opinion.

According to the latest FIFA update, Malaysia has fallen 14 places to the 135th position in the world – the lowest since 2006. This marks a significant decline, representing one of the most difficult periods for the national team in nearly two decades.

Malaysia has fallen 14 places to the 135th position in the world, the lowest since 2006.

The main reason stems from AFC's decision to cancel Malaysia's two wins against Nepal and Vietnam in the Asian Cup qualifiers, and also rule a 0-3 defeat due to violations regarding naturalized players. Previously, FIFA also canceled the results of friendly matches against Cape Verde, Singapore, and Palestine, causing the team to consecutively lose points and drop in ranking.

Notably, Coach Peter Cklamovski – who took over the team in December 2024 when Malaysia was ranked 135th in the world – believes that evaluating the team based on its current ranking is unfair. He candidly shared: "When you say the ranking has decreased or dropped, that is entirely beyond our control as the head coach, coaching staff, and players."

The 1978-born coach emphasized that what the team demonstrates on the field is the most accurate measure: "If we evaluate what we can control, the playing style and spirit we have built, then it is a satisfactory achievement. Being unbeaten is precisely the kind of real match we have played."

In closing, Coach Cklamovski continued to defend his position by affirming that the team's development process is still on the right track: "The process is moving in the right direction. What happened with the ranking is completely beyond our control." From his perspective, Malaysia should be evaluated based on its actual performance during the 90 minutes of play, rather than administrative fluctuations on the ranking table.
