Recently, defender Harry Maguire shared notable insights regarding the turbulent period on Manchester United's coaching bench, particularly the departure of coach Rúben Amorim and the arrival of successor Michael Carrick.
According to Maguire, the change in coach was a crucial turning point that helped Manchester United improve both in results and playing style. The English defender emphasized that the tactical system under Amorim, with a three-defender formation, brought many differences but was not truly suitable for the team. When switching to a four-defender formation under Carrick, the Red Devils gradually regained the necessary balance and effectiveness.
“The change greatly benefited the team. When playing in a specific system, especially a three-defender setup, you have to adapt in a completely different way. But clearly, for us, returning to a four-defender formation was necessary because the previous results were not good enough,” Maguire shared.
Nevertheless, the former Manchester United captain still holds great respect for Amorim. He affirmed that the Portuguese strategist possesses modern tactical thinking and bold ideas, but unfortunately could not successfully implement them at Old Trafford.
“I have nothing negative to say about him. I greatly respect and appreciate Amorim. He had excellent ideas, but they just didn’t work effectively at Manchester United. Football is like that; sometimes things don’t ‘click’. And players like us also bear responsibility for that,” Maguire candidly acknowledged.
Besides tactical factors, Maguire also shared about the differences in his personal role between the two systems. He admitted that he performs better in a four-defender formation, where he can actively press, compete, and advance to support ball development.
“When playing in a three-defender central setup, you often have to hold your position more, acting like a libero. That prevented me from utilizing my strengths in proactive defending. Meanwhile, in a four-defender formation, I feel much more confident and effective,” the defender born in 1993 added.
The arrival of Michael Carrick was also highly praised by Maguire. According to him, the new coaching staff facilitated a smooth tactical transition, thereby positively impacting the entire team. Improvements in playing organization and competitive spirit are helping Manchester United gradually restore the image of a top club in the Premier League.
As the season enters a crucial phase, these changes could become the foundation for Manchester United to aim for higher goals. For Maguire personally, playing in his preferred formation also opens opportunities for him to regain peak form and solidify his role in the Red Devils' defense.
