Manchester United is linked with countless midfield players, but Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano repeatedly emphasizes one name: Sandro Tonali! According to Romano, the Red Devils are indeed working hard to facilitate Tonali's transfer, and the Italian international is willing to join.

According to Romano, Tonali will inevitably return to play in Italy during his career, but not now. The 25-year-old Italian midfielder has a gentleman's agreement with Newcastle United: if the team fails to qualify for European competitions after this season, he can leave during the summer transfer window.
Romano stated: "Tonali is outstanding, and currently the possibility of him returning to Serie A is extremely slim. I really wish he could come back to play in Italy, but now this wish is almost impossible to realize; Italian fans will hardly see him for a while. I firmly believe that someday Tonali will return, not this summer, but in the future, because he still holds deep affection for Italy. At this moment, Manchester United is striving to secure Tonali's signing."
Last week, Manchester United already held preliminary talks with Tonali's agent. No agreement has been reached at this point, but Tonali expressed willingness to join. However, he also set several requirements: first, Manchester United must ensure a return to the Champions League. Once this condition is met, personal income will not be an obstacle. At Newcastle, Tonali normally earns £150,000 per week, reduced to £130,000 during his suspension period.
Additionally, Tonali demands that Manchester United must negotiate the transfer fee directly with Newcastle; he will not intervene or pressure like his former teammate Isak did, as "the Magpies" treated him well and provided significant support during his suspension. Although the Italian wants to leave, he insists on showing gratitude and not forcing the club.

Manchester United and Newcastle have not yet initiated formal official negotiations; that may happen after the season ends, when both clubs know their final Premier League standings and financial outlook. Newcastle does not wish to sell Tonali, but if the player requests a transfer, they will not force him to stay, especially if the team fails to qualify for European competitions and indeed needs to sell players to raise funds.
Under such circumstances, Newcastle would demand at least £70 million in fixed transfer fee, preferably £80 million, plus additional variable clauses. Manchester United hopes to conclude the deal for £55 million to £60 million, but this is basically impossible, as Newcastle paid £55 million to AC Milan to acquire Tonali.
Many clubs are interested in Tonali, such as Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain, so Manchester United lacks leverage to lower the price. Although Tonali might currently prefer moving to Old Trafford, he is not exclusively committed to joining the Red Devils. Only if the above conditions are met, Tonali will wear the Red Devils' No. 18 jersey, left by Casemiro, this summer.
Manchester United's dream plan for this summer is to sign both Tonali and Nottingham Forest's English international Elliot Anderson simultaneously, but this is likely very difficult to achieve. Just the transfer fees for both would total £190 million! Therefore, English media predict they will join different clubs, possibly choosing one of the two Manchester rivals.

Although Manchester United's key area for renovation this summer is midfield, they cannot allocate all budget to the same position; they must reserve funds for other transfers, including left winger, left back, goalkeeper, and even center-back positions where reinforcements are needed.
