England Team: Debates from Defense to Attack

The March training camp for England under Thomas Tuchel's leadership should have been the final step in preparing for the 2026 World Cup.

However, the 1-1 draw against Uruguay not only raised questions about the playing style but also highlighted a series of unresolved personnel issues.

England's defense remains uncertain

One of the biggest hot topics for England at this moment lies in the defensive line, where Tuchel's personnel choices still lack consensus. The case of Harry Maguire is a typical example.

The center-back born in 1993 continues to show stability when given opportunities, especially in the match against Uruguay, where he demonstrated good aerial ability, situational reading, and defensive command.

However, in Tuchel's priority order, Maguire is not the top choice. The German coach places more trust in younger, mobile center-backs who fit his pressing philosophy, such as Marc Guehi or Ezri Konsa.

This decision clearly reflects the tactical direction Tuchel is pursuing. He prioritizes players with flexible movement, capable of quick transitions, rather than relying on center-backs who lean on strength and experience.

Nevertheless, in the context of John Stones frequently facing fitness issues and other options lacking high stability, Maguire's experience remains a factor that could provide value in decisive matches.

No less complex is the problem on the right flank. Reece James is still considered the most comprehensive option if he reaches good fitness, thanks to his balanced offensive and defensive abilities. However, his injury history makes it difficult for him to maintain stability, forcing Tuchel to consider backup plans.

Among them, Tino Livramento emerges as a reliable choice due to stable performance and adaptability to tactical demands. Ben White offers versatility but faces considerable pressure from psychological factors following mixed public reactions.

The most notable case remains Trent Alexander-Arnold. Despite possessing top-tier creativity and attack initiation, he is not the type of defender suited to the highly disciplined system demanding intense defensive work rate that Tuchel builds. His exclusion from the latest squad list clearly shows the consistent view of the German coach: prioritizing tactical suitability over reputation.

Coach Tuchel still cannot "finalize" England's defense

On the left flank, the competition between Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon is also unresolved. Rashford brings experience and the ability to create breakthroughs, while Gordon better meets demands for speed, pressing, and defensive support. In Tuchel's system emphasizing operational intensity, these factors could become crucial advantages.

Who will backup Kane?

Compared to the defense, England's forward line gives a clearer sense of organization, though unresolved issues still exist.

In the attacking midfielder position, Jude Bellingham is almost an irreplaceable choice if fit. The star currently wearing Real Madrid's jersey demonstrates comprehensive influence, from regulating the playstyle to supporting goal scoring. Bellingham's presence helps England maintain a clearer attacking structure.

However, behind him is a notable competition. Phil Foden still hasn't found stability when wearing the national team jersey, especially when not playing in his preferred position. Meanwhile, Cole Palmer is gradually proving his value whenever given opportunities, and Morgan Rogers also shows progress at the club level.

What happened in the match against Uruguay partly reflects this situation. Foden didn't leave much impact, while Palmer brought energy and directness when entering from the bench. This could affect the priority order in upcoming training camps.

In the attack, the striker position belongs to Harry Kane without much debate. Not only is he the main scorer, Kane also plays a role in connecting the playstyle and creating space for surrounding satellites. However, the backup problem for him still lacks a clear solution.

Options like Dominic Solanke, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, or Ollie Watkins each have their strengths, but none has truly provided absolute reassurance. This could become a problem if Kane is not fit or needs rotation in a long tournament.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that England is gradually forming a relatively clear framework. Jordan Pickford remains the number one choice in goal, while key positions like center-back (with Guehi and Konsa), attacking midfielder (Bellingham), or striker (Kane) already have the most deserving names.
