Withdrawal from England squad, why Arsenal defended by Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel defends Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka after their departure from the England squad, asserting both injuries are genuine amid controversy.

Thomas Tuchel has spoken out to defend Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka after the Arsenal duo withdrew from the England squad ahead of the friendly match against Japan.

This decision quickly sparked controversy as many opinions suggested the two Arsenal stars are prioritizing the club during the crucial stage of the season. Previously, both Rice and Saka did not play in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay, as Tuchel intended to keep them for the next fixture at Wembley. However, plans changed when their physical condition was not assured, forcing them to leave the training camp early.

Facing waves of doubt, Tuchel affirms absolute trust in his players: “I understand why things may not look right, but I believe 100% in the honesty of Declan and Bukayo. We conducted medical checks, I monitored directly, and there is no reason to doubt them.”

According to the German strategist, both players still had issues after playing for Arsenal, especially in the final match against Manchester City. “They both felt unwell. They very much wanted to play, but clearly were not in optimal physical condition,” he emphasized.

Tuchel also dismissed the view that players “choose club over national team,” while revealing the specific efforts of Rice and Saka during recovery: “Declan even went out to train with teammates, and Bukayo trained in the gym trying to be fit to play. They didn’t come here and then request withdrawal, they genuinely tried.”

Additionally, the England head coach expressed concern about the congested schedule wearing down players’ fitness. He believes this is a hidden risk to the team’s ambitions in the upcoming World Cup: “It is a threat, not the biggest but very evident. Fatigue is real.”

Despite causing controversy, Tuchel believes resting key players in this training camp will bring long-term benefits, helping them reach optimal condition when returning for England’s important matches ahead.
