After Barcelona's controversial defeat against Atletico Madrid, referee István Kovács was suspended by UEFA, generating a major wave of focus.
The controversial decision in the Champions League quarter-final between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid has cost referee István Kovács dearly, as UEFA officially imposed a strict disciplinary penalty.
According to sources from Diario Sport, the Romanian "man in black" has been suspended from officiating in the remaining matches of this season's UEFA Champions League. This is considered a strong punitive move by UEFA following a series of errors in the match where Barcelona lost 0-2 to Atletico Madrid.
The match at Camp Nou heated up early in the 44th minute, when young center-back Pau Cubarsí received a direct red card, forcing the home team to play with a numerical disadvantage for most of the time. Although this decision was controversial, it was not the main focus of outrage.
The peak occurred in the 54th minute, when a clear situation in Atletico's penalty area was overlooked. After goalkeeper Juan Musso's pass, defender Marc Poblet used his hand to play the ball within the 5.5-meter area—a basic foul according to the rules. However, despite fierce protests from Barcelona players and spectators, referee Kovács still did not award a penalty. Notably, the VAR team also did not intervene to review the incident.
These decisions infuriated Barcelona. The Catalan club quickly filed a formal complaint with UEFA, accusing the refereeing work of "non-compliance with regulations," thereby directly affecting the match's dynamics and outcome.
The disciplinary action against Kovács is seen as a clear response from UEFA to public pressure. However, it is noteworthy that this referee remains listed to officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026, the tournament to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
This indicates that, despite being "suspended" in the Champions League, Kovács is still considered competent at the international level. Nevertheless, his reputation has undoubtedly been severely impacted following the controversies at Camp Nou.
