Argentinian tennis star Juan Martín del Potro recently shared his views in an interview on the current landscape of men's tennis dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. He believes that under the barriers built by these two new-generation kings, few players can compete with them, and South American players face immense challenges in aiming to win Grand Slam titles again.

Since Novak Djokovic won his 24th Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open, the power in men's tennis has swiftly shifted. Alcaraz and Sinner have split all subsequent Grand Slam titles, alternately holding the world No. 1 ranking, forming a new absolute dominance. Del Potro noted: "The current situation is very similar to the era of the 'Big Three.' Very few can beat Sinner and Alcaraz. They have won the last nine Grand Slams, clearly leading ahead of everyone else."

As the last South American player to win a Grand Slam, del Potro deeply understands the difficulty of breaking such monopolies. At the 2009 US Open, at just 20 years old, he defeated Roger Federer in the final, capturing the only Grand Slam among Federer and Nadal's 18 titles at that time. Regarding the challenges for South American players today, he specifically mentioned Brazilian rising star Fonseca. He believes Fonseca is exceptionally talented and plays with a strong style, but to challenge the giants, he still needs time and maturity.

“It's a process,” del Potro recalled. “Before my first win over Federer in the 2009 US Open final, I lost to him six times. The same happened facing Nadal and Djokovic. You have to face them repeatedly, lose repeatedly, then gradually learn their game and build confidence.”
Speaking on why he didn't win more Grand Slams, del Potro admitted that competing in the same era as the "Big Three" was unfortunate, but also fortunate. “Sometimes we reflect that being able to compete against the three greatest players in history is itself an extra challenge and honor.”
