Mixed fortunes! Zhang Zhizhen triumphs in Houston debut, Wu Yibing misses out on clay season opener

On March 30, 2026, the ATP250 Houston event kicked off with the men's singles first round. The two Chinese competitors in the tournament, Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing, had a mix of success and disappointment in their initial matches. Hong Kong's Coleman Wong is scheduled to play tomorrow at 7:00 AM Beijing time, facing the home favorite and seventh seed, Michelsen.

As the sole men's clay court event held in the United States, the singles champions over the past four years have all been domestic players. This year's Houston draw is led by four prominent American players: Shelton, Tiafoe, Lerner Qian, and Paul, with a total of 14 U.S. athletes entering the main draw. Wu Yibing and Coleman Wong secured direct entry based on their rankings, while Zhang Zhizhen received a wild card.

Zhang Zhizhen, who played first, faced British opponent Pennington, who had qualified through two rounds of qualifying. Despite his current world ranking being only 270, Zhang's performance far surpassed that ranking. After starting tied at 1-1, he won seven consecutive games, leading 6-1/2-0; towards the end of the match, he secured another break to win 6-1/6-3. The entire match lasted just 63 minutes, with Zhang hitting 5 aces and 12 winners, and achieving an 83% first-serve win rate. After earning 25 ranking points and $12,285 in prize money, Zhang's live ranking rose to No.239.

In the second round, Zhang Zhizhen will challenge the top seed Shelton, who had a first-round bye. Shelton is the only Top 10 player competing in a tour event this week. In their two previous encounters, each has won once: Shelton prevailed in the 2023 Australian Open first round and advanced to the quarterfinals; Zhang Zhizhen won in straight sets at the 2024 Rome Masters, ultimately reaching the quarterfinals and matching his best Masters result.

Wu Yibing faced Australian qualifier Bolt in the first round. After securing an early break in the first set, he missed his chance to serve out the set. In the tie-break, leading 6-4 and having a set point, he lost four consecutive points to lose 6-7(6). In the second set, after being 2-1 up, he lost five straight games to fall 2-6. Throughout the match, Wu's 34 unforced errors were a key factor in shifting the match's outcome. Bolt will face the winner between the sixth seed Etcheverry and qualifier Gomez in the second round.

The defending champion and eighth seed Brooksby suffered an unexpected defeat in the first round, losing 4-6/2-6 to fellow American McDonald, ending his title defense. In other matches, Vallejo defeated Schwajda 6-1/6-4 and will face the fourth seed Paul in the next round.

Schedule for WTA500 Charleston tournament

At the WTA500 Charleston event, Chinese player Yuan Yue, who lost in the final round of qualifying, entered the main draw as a lucky loser following Mertens' pre-match withdrawal. Her first-round opponent is Sherif. Both Yuan Yue and Zhang Shuai will play their women's singles first-round matches at 23:00 Beijing time tonight.
